Charles “Chuck” Newns
( March 22, 1933 – July 3, 2015 )
On July 3, 2015, Tacony and especially the Joseph C.McCloskeyCharitable Fund lost one of their most ardent supporters. After a year long battle with cancer our friend, “Chuck”, passed away. He will be missed by all who knew him.
Chuck had that rare quality to make friends easily. Umpiring was a natural for him. He took control of the situation and laid down the law. He put things in order. When you earned his respect, you had a friend for life. But his finest quality was his heart. There was nothing he would not do to help someone in need. They just do not come any better. Officer McCloskey would have been proud. He was one of Joe’s best.
Our condolences to his wife, Phyllis and their family and to his brother Jack.
In September of 2012 the McCloskey Fund presented an award to the Quaker City Yacht Club for actively supporting the Fund. The award was named the, Charles “CHUCK” Newns Award. That is what Chuck Newns means to us.
He will be with us in spirit when Goople’s Memorial is dedicated in August.
A big part of Chuck’s life has been the“OLD TIMERS” BATS AND BALLS Association. It is a terrific organization which started 10 years ago, a place where old ball players gather for lunch and talk about the good ol’e days.
Our best wishes to Chuck’s friends and co-directors: Ron Fritz, Ron March and Jack Purdy.
